Phri: Greetings, today I am gonna 'learn 'ya how to make anime styled hair!
Visitor: Those who can't do teach.
Phri: Just hush up and listen!
Visitor: I don't think you know what your doing.
Phri: Neither do you, that's why you're here *VEG*
Visitor: Oh, yeah, I forgot!
Phri: Can we start now?
Visitor: yes.
Phri: I assume you already have a style in mind, so let's begin!
You should have your base doll in front of you. Zoom in till you feel it is big enough to work with. (I zoom 200%)

Create a new level above your base doll. This will be the level for HAIR#1.

Pick a darker tint of the color you will make the hair.

Use a pencil or brush tool that is only 1 pixel big. Draw an outline of the hairstyle.

Now select the base color for the hair.

Fill in the hair outline with that color.

(Now you have a doll with hair, simple right? Ugly too, let's give it some style!)

Create a new layer (optional)--This will be hair_highlights1

Select your airbrush/spraybrush or similar tool.

Choose a brush size that is small enough to allow you to work without getting messy/go outside the lines. (I use 10pixels)

Now pick a color, lighter in tone then the base color hair.

Make a few streaks in a top to bottem motion within the borders of the hair.

Good job!
Visitor: Giggle, you're too into this!
Phri: But I'm helping *G*
Now select a brush size HALF of the size you just used.

Choose a brush color several shades DARKER then your base hair color.

(This starts to get tricky, but don't worry, I believe in you!)

Use your brush and make some streaks along ONE side of all the new light streaks. (You're doing great!)

Now make another layer (optional)--This will be for hair_shadows. [Tip* I always make my shadows first, they are less involved and allow me to set a pattern for myself when continuing with the following steps.]

Select a brush color that will be the DARKEST color you will use on the hair.

On the top areas of the head, use the brush around the roots of the hair. Start at the center of the top of the head and just make several different streaks from the center out. These can be varying lengths depending on the style you are aiming for. Also, run your brush down the CENTER and EDGES, one streak at a time, of the lighter colored streaks from hair_highlights. (Wow, it's starting to look like hair! Great Job!)

Visitor: Hey, this is kinda fun!
Phriday: I wish I was the kind of person that says 'I told you so'. I will just smirk instead. ::smirk::

Create a new layer--This will be hair_highlights2.

Leave your brush the same size it has been for the past several steps. [remember* half the size of hair_highlights1]
Pick a color several shades lighter then the color in hair_highlights1.

Make some streaks inside the borders of the streaks from hair_highlights1. These streaks should be shorter in length and should not cover the entire streak from hair_highlights1. You merely want to create a highlight effect.

Now choose a brush color several shades lighter then the one you just used.

Make one more set of streaks over the ones you just made. These should be even smaller in length and only placed where you think is needed. [Tip* you will want some areas to stay darker for the effect]
Create a new level--This will be for Shine.

Go back to your original brush size. (I used 10pixels)

Select a shade of white for your brush.

Make a somewhat halo-ed design on the top of the head and a lightning-ed design on the lower areas of the hair.

Now reduce the opacity/increase transparency of 'Shine' level till it blends in somewhat with the lower levels.

You now have a doll with Anime Hair! ^_~ see wasn't that easy?

Visitor: OMG it totally was! WOW, Phri you are my new favorite person of the week!
Phri: I know. Mehbe next time you will believe me when I tell ye' something.
Just add clothes & you have your very own anime doll!

Visitor: Oooh can I adopt her??!
Phri: Yes, but only if you complete this tutorial and email me a copy of the doll your created using it, so that I can adopt it ^_^
Visitor: Aww, Phri, you're mean!
Phri: Nope, I just donated 3 hours of my time for this tutorial, I think you owe me one. *G*
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial & actually learned something. Email me your finished dolls below. Even if you don't adopt the tutorial doll, I would still like to see your creations ^_^
